Experience the thrill of rock climbing in the breathtaking landscapes of Tigray, Ethiopia. This 4-day climbing tour takes you through towering sandstone cliffs, hidden rock-hewn churches, and historical sites, offering both adventure and cultural immersion.

Day 01 :
Mekelle to Hawzen – Introduction to Tigray Climbing

The adventure begins with an early morning departure from Mekelle, the capital of the Tigray region, heading north toward Hawzen. The scenic drive takes approximately 3 to 4 hours, passing through breathtaking landscapes of rolling hills, dramatic rock formations, and traditional villages. Upon arrival in Hawzen, climbers will settle into their accommodations before heading out for the first climbing session.

The day’s climbing takes place on the sandstone cliffs around Hawzen, featuring routes ranging from 12 to 18 meters. These routes provide a perfect introduction to the unique rock formations of Tigray, offering both technical and endurance challenges. Over the course of the day, climbers will tackle three different routes, each presenting a distinct challenge and rewarding views of the surrounding landscapes.

After an exciting day on the rocks, climbers will return to Hawzen to relax and enjoy a traditional Ethiopian dinner. The evening can be spent exploring the town, meeting local residents, or preparing for the more challenging climbs ahead in the coming days.

Day 02 :
The adventure continues to Gheralta

The adventure continues to Gheralta, home to the famous rock-hewn churches and spectacular climbing sites. The main challenge will be Towlehe Mountain, a 110-meter ascent that spans two days. Climbers will take on three distinct routes, each featuring a combination of vertical ascents, technical sections, and breathtaking panoramas. Between climbs, there will be an opportunity to visit historic rock churches such as Abuna Yemata Guh, known for its high-altitude setting and intricate frescoes. Nights will be spent in a comfortable lodge in Hawzien, offering panoramic views of the Gheralta range.

Day 03 :
Adwa and surroundings Semayata, Emba Hbey, and Emba Gerae

The journey moves to Adwa, a historically significant region known for Ethiopia’s victory over Italian forces in 1896. Here, climbers will explore the peaks of Semayata, Emba Hbey, and Emba Gerae, each offering unique challenges and some of the best rock quality in Tigray. With its solid formations and varied climbing styles, Adwa is a hidden gem for rock climbers. After a day of adventure, climbers can explore the historic town and reflect on the significance of the Battle of Adwa before settling into their accommodations for the night.

Day 04 :
Yeha and Surroundings – Adventure Climbing & Ancient History

The final day of the climbing adventure takes you to Yeha, a site rich in both history and climbing opportunities. One of Ethiopia’s oldest and most historically significant sites. Yeha offers a thrilling mix of remote climbing routes and ancient heritage, with towering rock formations that challenge even experienced climbers. The journey is complemented by a visit to the Temple of Yeha, a 2,700-year-old archaeological marvel from the pre-Axumite era. The combination of adventure and history makes this a perfect way to conclude the Tigray climbing experience.
