Rock Climbing

Most tourists are unaware of Ethiopia’s vast adventure potential, and even fewer recognize its remarkable geological, botanical, and zoological wonders. In the high desert of Tigray, Ethiopia’s northernmost region, monolithic sandstone towers rise up to 180 meters, forming a dramatic landscape. While these formations have been partially explored for religious purposes—leading to the creation of rock-hewn churches nestled within saddles and depressions—their sheer walls, intricate faces, and towering summits remain largely untouched by climbers.

The crimson spires piercing the azure sky resemble something out of legend—the kind of rock formations climbers dream of discovering, so rare that few remain in their pristine state. Ancient stone-carved pathways wind their way through these religious fortresses, connecting a labyrinth of centuries-old churches. For most visitors, exploring these sacred sites is the closest they will come to climbing in Ethiopia. Yet, hidden within these vertical landscapes lies an unparalleled adventure, waiting to be uncovered.
