Adwa: A Hidden Gem for Rock Climbers and History Enthusiasts

Nestled in a rugged mountainous region, Adwa offers numerous climbing areas within a 30–45 minute drive from the town center. The peaks here remain largely unexplored, boasting rock quality superior to much of Tigray, particularly when compared to the red sandstone formations of Gheralta.

Beyond its natural allure, Adwa holds a defining place in Ethiopian history. It was here, in 1896, that Ethiopia secured a decisive victory against Italy, ensuring its sovereignty. To this day, Ethiopians take immense pride in being the only African nation never colonized, with the Battle of Adwa standing as a pivotal moment in the country’s long and storied past.

The climbing season runs from mid-September to late May, with a short rainy period in late April and early May. Autumn is a spectacular time to visit, as the landscape transforms into a lush green expanse. Given that harvest season coincides with this period, climbers should be mindful of farm fields while exploring.
